If you have never heard of Maira Kalman welcome to her amazing world. Some of you may know her without having realized it. She has illustrated countless New Yorker covers. She has written some amazing books such as And the Pursuit of Happiness which is jammed packed with her unique illustrations and observations and research and a children's book I was given by my friend Courtney just before I left for Tokyo called Sayonara Mrs Kackleman. Her designs have also been made into merchandise such as my mother in law's shower curtain with is a map of the world Kalman-style.
The reason I am writing about her now is that if you are going to New York, there is a retrospective of her work at The Jewish Museum on 5th Avenue and it is on until 31 July 2011. So I will get a chance to see it this summer! Don't miss it. She is illuminating.
