When I was six or seven, a relatively new reader by American standards, I received a birthday present of a collage set. It had bits of brightly coloured and patterned paper and stickers and paper to collage upon. I loved that set but before I even opened it, I was disappointed. I read the title incorrectly and out loud. I read it as college set and the grown ups around me laughed. What would a child's college set contain? Brochures with simple descriptions, applications to fill in (I always loved filling in forms), a cap and gown? Ironically, such a set laughed at by 1970's parents of the time, would be considered highly appropriate preparation for my New York contemporaries today.
Anyway, my collage set paid off. Whenever we were left with a pretty piece of wrapping paper or card, I always suggested that we "save it for collage". That is how I became the horder I am. Perhaps the legacy is a mixed bag. After months of cutting out images of my acrylic painting papers, something is beginning to happen. And I am pleased. Take a look.
"I love those collages."
